When the holiday glitz slowly gives way
to the snow and slush of early January, it marks the beginning of the
two most dreadful months of the year for me. At least usually. January
and February are those months where my daily commute to work requires at
least two unflattering layers to protect me from the elements. I see
the sun only on the weekends and fairy lights no longer hold the promise
of cozy holidays with loved ones. But thanks to the demands of an
increasingly globalized economy, this year I have the privilege of
spending my least favorite months in a warmer climate.
As I was researching temperatures for my
new habitat, I finally discovered some use for what I generally consider
the most senseless season in the fashion calendar: RESORT. It’s hard
not to chafe at a tanned model in a bikini smiling down benignly from
its larger-than-life canvas as one dodges ice patches on the sidewalk
(in one’s most unflattering but oh-so-warm footwear) in search of a hot
white bean chili. But this year, I was rather grateful for “resort”
collections as the bikini offerings of the French countryside in
mid-December are quite sparse.
However, while I may have caved into
giving credibility to the third season for the sake of my swim- and
casual wardrobe, I’m not yet at that point for my work clothes. I still
like to make my work wear go the extra mile. So whether you are
spending January and February in the cold North East or sunny Singapore,
a few basics can take you all the way through 2014 – wherever it may be
that you are doing business this year.
Wide-legged trousers will continue to
stick around in 2014 and they look as professional as they are
comfortable. So use the winter sales and pick up a pair in a
light-to-medium weight wool fabric. For colder climates pair them with a
cozy, tailored cardigan-jacket in winter white. Add warm boots and a
structured bag in charcoal and top off your neutral ensemble with amber
jewelry. For warmer climates, add a breezy silk or satin jacket in a
punchy color (e.g. orange, fuchsia, emerald) or a floral print. Add gray
heels during the day. At night, swap out your sensible shoes for
glittering sandals and add a statement clutch with a zig-zag print for
good measure.
But whatever fashion advice you choose to
follow (or not to follow for that matter) this year, I hope 2014 will
be a happy and healthy one for you and your loved ones!
